Food, crafts part of 17th annual faire

Thousands of people converged on Ramona Garden Park last weekend for the 17th annual Stone Soup Music Faire sponsored by the Grover Beach Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber officials couldn’t be reached by press time for an estimate of total visitors, but organizers predicted 15,000 people would attend the two-day festival that originally started as a Cal Poly Arts event.
Nine groups performed music ranging from Celtic rock and taiko drumming to folk and mariachi styles while festivalgoers shopped for gifts and crafts at the many vendor booths and ate a variety of foods, including Mexican and Oriental dishes as well as barbecued chicken and tri-tip.
The free event included a street dance Saturday night and a health fair and was held in conjunction with the annual Dune Run Run 5k and 10k run along the beach and into the dunes.
The name of the festival is drawn from an old folk tale about a village full of hungry people that’s visited by a traveler who promises to make a tasty soup from a stone.
As he cooks the stone, he asks the villagers to each add something to flavor the stew, and by the time it’s done, they’ve all contributed enough to feed the entire village.
That idea of blending contributions from various cultures to create a satisfying festival is the theory behind the Stone Soup Music Faire.
