n Democratic Women United will host a gathering on each night of the upcoming presidential and vice presidential candidates’ debates at Creekside Mobile Home Park Community Room, 3960 S. Higuera, San Luis Obispo. Interested voters are invited to watch the debate and stay on for a moderated discussion of the events.

The debates are scheduled for the following dates and topics: Sept. 26, domestic policy; Oct. 2, vice presidential debate; Oct. 7, town hall format; Oct. 15, foreign policy.

Reservations are not required. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and debates start at 6 p.m. Coffee and tea will be served. Participants may bring a brown bag dinner.

n The Arroyo Grande High School Class of 1978 will hold its 30-Year class reunion Sept. 26, 27 and 28. Friday night meet in the Village of Arroyo Grande at the Harvest Festival for the fish fry. Wear blue and gold; there will be name tags provided. Saturday will be A Night at the Beach at the Pismo State Beach Golf Course (in the tent), Le Sage Drive, Grover Beach. No- host cocktails, a catered dinner and dancing will be from 7 to 11 p.m. Sonny and the Music Machine will provide the music. A family picnic will be held Sunday with the location to be announced at the reunion.

Saturday

n Creek Day 2008 will be from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 27 at various check-in stations throughout the county. Volunteers remove trash from creeks and rivers before storm flows wash it downstream into the ocean and onto the beaches. Bags and latex gloves are provided.

The Grover Beach Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring the sixth annual Fall Skate Classic Skate Contest from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the South County Skate Park, 1750 Ramona Ave., Grover Beach.

Contestants may enter one of the following divisions: 6 and under, 7 to 9 years, 10 to 13 years, 14 to 17 years, 18 and older, sponsored 14 and under, sponsored 15 and older, women (all ages). Entry fee is $15.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. and all contestants must be registered prior to 11 a.m. to be included.

n The Dunes Center and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will co-host a sunset one-mile roundtrip hike into the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes National Wildlife Refuge at 5:30 p.m. The hike is a family-friendly event and will focus on family outdoor recreation and on natural history interpretation as part of the ongoing “Connecting Families with Nature Project.”

Wear hiking clothing and boots, layers of clothing, and bring water, snacks, and a flashlight or headlamp. Cameras and binoculars are recommended. No pets are allowed.

n Friends of the Elephant Seal will hold docent training classes Saturdays, Oct. 4, 18 and Nov. 1. Applications must be received by Sept. 27. Participants will learn about the marine mammals that visit and breed on the Central Coast.

n An advanced basketball clinic for youths in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades is starting Sept. 28 at Arroyo Grande High School. The clinic will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. every Sunday through December.

The clinic is designed to enhance technique and improve basketball skills for youths in the South County area and to prepare them for junior high and high school basketball. Individual instruction for high school students is available. There will be a charge to cover the cost of insurance and gym time.

Tuesday

n The Monarch Club at Trilogy Central Coast will host an artists’ reception Sept. 30, as part of the countywide Plein Air Festival highlighting the talents of landscape painters and the beauty of the Central Coast.

The public is invited to “Meet the Artists” from 6 to 8 p.m. and view some of the work they have created alfresco during the weeklong festival sponsored by the San Luis Obispo Art Center.

Along with a selection of newly painted landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes, the artists’ reception will feature local and regional wines and appetizers handcrafted by Pandee Pearson, executive chef of Adelina’s Bistro at Trilogy.

Wednesday

Free senior health screenings will run from 9 a.m. to noon at First Methodist Church, 275 N. Halcyon Road in Arroyo Grande. EOC Health Services offers the screenings that include blood pressure monitoring, pulse and weight readings, and blood tests for anemia, diabetes and high cholesterol. No appointment is needed. Future

The San Luis Obispo Children’s Museum will hold its annual benefit, “Obispo Jones and the Return of the Lost Jewel,” Saturday, Oct. 11. Themed hors d’oeuvres will be followed by a sit-down dinner, interactive scavenger hunt, exotic animals, poker and gaming tables.

Guests can bid on items that include tickets to this year’s Grammy Awards and after-party, fighter pilot rides, and an exclusive sleepover at the museum.

The adventure begins at 6 p.m. on the grounds overlooking the ocean at the Dolphin Bay Resort & Spa in Shell Beach. “Indy” attire is encouraged. For more information, call 545-5874 or visit www.slocm.org.

n Spend an “Evening in Greece” from 5 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the South County Regional Center in Arroyo Grande.

Enjoy an authentic Greek dinner including lamb shish kabob and baklava. Learn to dance Greek with a live band and be entertained by ethnic Greek dancers. The event, sponsored by St. Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Church in San Luis Obispo, will also include a silent auction and giveaway. Tickets are $60 per adult and $40 per student or child (under 12).
